Every year the Celtic Nations pays tribute to those who have served our cause and our people. This year we pay honor to Nancy O'Connell.
Nancy O’Connell 1941 – 2008
Nancy Greaves was born on Christmas Day, 1941, in Memphis, Tennessee of Scots-Irish descent, which, no doubt contributed mightily to her love of Ireland, Scotland and their traditional arts and music. It helped no doubt, that she met and married an Irishman
studying in Boston and lived in Scotland for a year before returning to live in New Orleans where she raised their two children and became involved in that which became her true life’s work; Volunteerism and Philanthropic fundraising for the arts and dispossessed. Nancy was involved with New Orleans Audubon Zoo and became chairperson of the annual fundraiser, the “Zoo-To-Do” in 1984, her success in that area led to her traveling across the U.S. assisting other zoos and not-for profits in their efforts to raise funds. In 1988, Nancy became president of the New Orleans Ballet Company and was instrumental in the hiring of a nationally recognized manager and the stabilization of what is now a prominent Ballet present association. She was the deserved recipient of many civic and cultural honors and awards for her services to the arts and community. All during this time, Nancy and her husband, were patrons of O’Flaherty’s Ballad Room” in the French Quarter of New Orleans. She soon was convinced of the need to support the cultural and educational value of Danny O’Flaherty’s contribution to the region and as such became involved in canvassing support, using her many contacts to get visas for visiting artists and acting as Executive Director for many years for the Celtic Nations Heritage Festival. Nancy’s hobby and later her business was knitting and needlework. In this area she was instrumental in obtaining knitters, needle workers and tatters from the Celtic nations of Ireland, Scotland and Galicia to demonstrate their skills at the Festival, adding to the family fare provided. Until illness prohibited her participation in the functions of the festival, Nancy was an ardent supporter of this deserving organization.
Deep peace of the running wave to you.
Deep peace of the flowing air to you.
Deep peace of the quiet earth to you.
Deep peace of the shining stars to you.
Gaelic Version
